Today we are looking at Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary, which is a word study dictionary covering the entire Bible. Here are three tips for using Mounce’s Dictionary in our app to enrich your personal Bible study! ONE: RESOURCE GUIDE We talk about the Resource Guide all the time because it is incredibly helpful when studying the Bible in our app. Have you ever been reading a passage of scripture and had a question about a person, place, or topic? Now you can get answers without even leaving the passage. Open your favorite Bible translation in the main window. I’ve picked out the ESV! Then, tap the split window handle and drag it to a width or height that you prefer. As you scroll through the Bible text, the Resource Guide keeps up with you and searches through all the books in your library for related content. If you scroll down through the Resource Guide results, you will see the section headings “People,” “Places,” and “Topics.” Tap on the person, place, or topic that you want to learn more about. I chose the topic “Fellowship” because my church is currently working through Acts. Scripture tells us that the early church what devoted to fellowship…but what does that mean? You’ll see that Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary has the words “Article to Fellowship” underneath the book cover. Tap on the book cover and the app will take you directly to the article. You can scroll and read the entire article without having to leave your Bible text! I was able to follow along as we read this passage in church, while also gaining deeper insights. It’s honestly so convenient. If there are scripture references in the article that you would like to read, tap the verse and it will appear in a pop-up window. You can also tap the top right hand corner of the pop-up window to change which window you read the scripture in—main or split! It looks like this: TWO: LOOKUP FEATURES Maybe you aren’t sure where to find a certain topic in God’s Word, but you want to know more! You can search any topic in our Lookup feature and resources like Mounce’s Dictionary will show up, ready to give you the information you’re looking for. Here’s how: For iPhone or iPad users, open the Resource Guide in the split window. Then tap the gear icon, followed by the “lookup” option in iOS. You can type “Fellowship” and tap “search”. This will bring up Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary article on Fellowship as we’ve seen before. If you like reading your Bible “full screen”, try the integrated look-up feature. Tap and hold a word in the Bible text and an option menu bar will pop up. From here you get an array of option—one of them being Lookup! If you tap the “Lookup” button you’ll get “hits” from your resources on just that specific word. Like before, just tap the book cover and you can read the article in the pop-up window, or choose to open it in the Main or Split window. THREE: INTEGRATES WITH STRONG’S TAGGED BIBLES If you have a Bible tagged with Strong’s, Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary is a great addition to your library. Since I have the English Standard Version (ESV) with Strong’s, I pulled it up in my main window and tapped “fellowship”. This brings up the Strong’s article and definition for koinonia. From there I tapped “look up koinonia.” This brought up Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary that I can tap and read the article on koinonia in a window of my choosing. Buy Now! Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38 KJV https://bible.com/bible/1/act.2.38.KJV
When looking up my book, you have to type in the whole title of it, or type in my name under the title. There are millions of books with the title, “My Life”. My book is written about my life, which is Nonfiction. It took me a lot of time to write my book, but even through the hard times when I was in tears writing my book, reliving those sad moments, as well as the happy moments, I kept my focus. I kept on writing until the end. When it was all said and done and sent to the publishers, I was in tears then. I was happy that I had accomplished something that will never be taken from me, that will always be around for years in the future for future generations to read and enjoy, and to receive inspiration from.
I wrote my book three months after my grandmother passed away. I never knew that I was going to do something like this in my life. I wish she were here to see this accomplishment that I have completed. I wish I could have written it when she was living. I wish I could read it to her right now. I really wish my brother were here to see this, he would be so proud of me. I wish my grandfather were here to see this that I have done. I can truly say that I feel like they are smiling down on me from heaven. I feel like they are proud of me even now.
When I think about what God has done in my life, I cannot help but to become emotional. He made my dream come true. He has opened up doors for me that I never thought I would ever be able to walk through. I know there are more doors to be opened for me that no man can shut. If it were not for all of the things I have experienced in my life, my book would not have ever been written. When reading something someone has written, one must understand that every story is different that’s written. Every writer has a story to tell, or advice to give that they feel someone can use to help themselves with. Fiction stories are just that, stories made up by the writer, and Nonfiction is what it is, Nonfiction, something that actually happened in the writer’s life. Writers write about many things that inspire them. This is why there are so many writers and so many books in the world, because everyone has a story to tell.
When you read my book, you will get to know me better. You will get to see a glimpse into my life, not only that, but you will also get to read about some of the things I went through as a child, and even as an adult. This book was written from my heart and my soul. All of my emotions are poured into every page written. There were even times when I had to stop writing because I could not see because of the tears that were in my eyes. The memories were raw as if it were just happening all over again. It’s funny how we remember every detail about things that has happened to us, be it in the past, or even in the present. I guess it is good to remember every detail about things that has been experienced in life. I can only speak for myself though. It is just a gift that I was born with. When I learned that I was a very detailed person, and could remember small things about some things, or everything about a lot of things, I began to write things from memory, or speak about things from memory. I suppose I will always be this way.
My next book is being written; I have already started on it. I cannot wait to finish it. It is going to take some time though; I am going to make sure it is how I want it to be word for word, no changes whatsoever. I will design my cover just as I designed my cover for this book. It will be different though; something soft, but versatile. I cannot wait to just sit and read the whole rough draft after I have finished writing it. When it is all said and done, I will reveal the title of my book. With that being said, keep traveling through the pages of the book you are reading enjoying your adventure. As always, thank you for joining me on my journey with Food for the Soul.

Can you find your zodiac sign? If so, leave it in the comments. I think it will be fun.

Bible commentaries and study notes are great tools for understanding what the Bible has to say to us today. Often overlooked, however, is the value that using scripture to understand scripture can bring. God’s inspired word is a complex tapestry of themes all woven together, and the development of those themes can provide us with insight into the relevant message of the Bible for today’s readers. USING SCRIPTURE TO INTERPRET SCRIPTURE Finding our way around these themes can be a daunting task, especially given the variety of subjects covered in the Bible. A word search can be helpful, but it can give an incomplete picture due to the complexity of language and the context in which words are used. The great news is that you can use tools like the Thompson Chain Reference Study Bible. It links various themes together as they are mentioned and developed throughout Scripture. The very heart of this product is the thematic chains that number in the thousands and people at all stages of learning about the Bible have used it in the 100 years since its initial release. The Thompson Chain resource is also a great study Bible, offering cross-references, book outlines, book introductions, maps, and harmonies to aid us in our study. THOMPSON CHAIN IN THE APP We’ve put quite a bit of attention into converting the rich topical content so it can be used in the app. Our goal was to make navigating the famous topical chains easy and intuitive and to allow quick access to the additional materials as well. We’re going to walk through a quick example of how the Olive Tree Bible App can make navigating the Thompson Chain Reference Study Bible enjoyable and easy. The example uses and refers to the iPad version of our software. We’ve designed this resource to work seamlessly with the built-in resource guide USING THE STUDY CENTER If you want to follow along with the example, bring 1 Samuel chapter 17 up in your Bible. With everything set up, the screen will look similar to this, depending on what resources you have: To see the chains, tap the name of the Thompson Chain under the Commentaries section of the resource guide. Your split-window view will change to a listing of verses directly related to your location: Choose the verse you want by tapping on it in the split window. In this example we’ll choose 17:4: You can now choose the theme you want to explore in the list under that verse, for instance, choosing 1409, Descendants of Rapha results in the following: Now it’s as easy as tapping on each verse reference to get a popup where you can read the appropriate Bible text. When you are done with this chain, you can tap the back arrow at the upper left corner of the split screen to return to the verse menu. SEARCH PEOPLE AND TOPICS There are also some other gems available but a little less obvious. For this example, tap the David entry under the People section. After you’ve tapped on it, the screen will look like this: The Resource Guide automatically shows you that there is an article on David available in the Thompson Chain resource. Tap on the article to read it. There is also a map on the Journeys of David under the Maps section that you can open. Tap the map to make it full screen, and pinch and zoom to make the image larger: Buy Now! We hope that you’ll start learning about the value of using scripture to interpret scripture!
