Inspiration for the NTSK

The verse that provided the inspiration for James H. Smith to purchase the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge for himself was 2 Timothy 1:7. In the KJV, this verse says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” This verse and the references listed for it were what God used to begin his journey of updating this resource, a journey that he wouldn’t complete until nearly forty years later. Let’s look at these references.

THE SPIRIT

This is the Greek word pneuma, which is labeled a figure of speech for metonymy of the cause. The Spirit is put also for His quickening, regenerating, and sanctifying work in man, in creating the new nature with its spiritual desires and powers (cf. Ps 51:10).

The concept connected with the word group to which this word belongs has reference to living soberly and righteously in this present world in watchful expectation of Christ’s coming, as well as reference to avoidance of ecstatic and eschatological frenzy. Trench remarks of the related word sophrosunee at 1 Ti 2:9 that it refers to “that inner self-government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires.”
