On a purely subjective level, I think dreams are one of the strangest experiences we have as humans. They often defy many of the rules that govern our everyday lives and clearly do not “make sense” in our logical world. Dreams are sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often confusing enough to leave me bewildered.

Nevertheless, I recognize that God frequently uses dreams throughout the Bible. One way to discover the prevalence of dreams in the Bible is by using Olive Tree’s Bible Topic Threads. Dreams Can Provide Warnings

“But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, ‘Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.’” – Genesis 20:3

“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. Dreams Can Prophesy of Future Events

“Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.’ His brothers said to him, ‘Are you indeed to reign over us? “And one night they both dreamed—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—each his own dream, and each dream with its own interpretation. Dreams Can Give Promises

“And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, ‘I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth…and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” – Genesis 28:12-15

“At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, ‘Ask what I shall give you.’ Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?’ And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Dreams Can Be a Means of Revelation

“And the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. And he said, ‘Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the LORD make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house.’” – Numbers 12:5-7

“And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets…Then Samuel said to Saul, ‘Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?’ Saul answered, ‘I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I shall do.’” – 1 Samuel 28:6,15

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.” – Joel 2:28
